Oskar urged his donkey forward, trying to ignore the feeling of eyes watching him from the trees that lined the meager road his cart was currently bouncing along. Why had he listened to that old man at the inn? This may be a shorter way to the city, but if he gets ravaged by bandits before he gets there was it really worth it? No. No, it certainly wouldn’t be. Oskar chanced a quick scan of the treeline as covertly as his fear allowed and breathed a deep sigh of relief at the absence of armed men he found there. He turned back to the road and was equally pleased to see the crossroads coming into view ahead. At least the old fool had been right about that. Oskar smiled to himself and leaned forward to give his donkey a comforting pat on the rear. When he looked back up he felt his stomach heave to meet his plummeting heart. Small glows were dancing around the trees at the end of the road, as numerous as fireflies but large enough to be torches and otherworldly enough to be terrifying.
Gods, I hope those are bandits.
